           (Part 2)
        By Alan Neeley
@
In part 1 of this series of articles, we
talked about how to 'log-on' as a new
user by going through the newuser pro
cess and creating an account so that you
can get back on in the future. Once you
have created this account, a SYSOP will
soon upgrade your status to an active
access level (if this doesn't happen, be
sure to notify us and it will be done
right away). I should also mention that
if you are a member of the ADAM-LINK of
Utah user's group, be sure to notify us
by leaving a message in the feedback
area. Upon verification, your access
level will then be raised to a member
status (allowing you more access to the
BBS).

Remember each time you get ready to call
the BBS, To have your account # and
Password ready so that you can get
logged-on without wasting time (espec
ially if your calling long distance).
Once connected to the BBS, you are asked
to press RETURN. A brief log-on message
is displayed. If you are familiar with
this message and don't wish to read it,
Enter an A and press RETURN to abort
this. Otherwise, just press RETURN to
continue on.

Next you are asked to enter your handle
or Log-in ID#. At this point enter your
account # (you can just enter your han
dle if you want but the process will
take longer). Next you are asked for
your password. Enter it and press RETURN
(remember, you will see X's printed on
your screen each time you enter a pass
word character). The computer will then

Verify to make sure you have entered
everything correct. If you haven't, you
will be asked to try again (check what
your password and account # are supposed
to be and try again -- remember to be
careful). If you have entered everything
correctly, you will be allowed to
continue on.

Next you are taken to the welcome area
of the BBS. You are told how many calls
you can make to the BBS on the current
day (this number varies depending on
your access level and how many times you
have called during the current day). A
message is then displayed asking you if
you would like to skip the welcome file.
Entering a N here will cause a brief
message to be displayed informing you
who your SYSOP is, the total calls made
to BBS, who the last caller was, the
last date you called the BBS, and so
forth. Entering a Y will skip this mes
sage and continue on to the next step.

If there is any special bulletins or
important information that I wish all
user's calling the BBS to see, they will
be displayed next. Information found
here may include such things as
announcements of contests, changes to
the BBS, or other related happenings.
This area is known as the New news sec
tion. If you already have read the
bulletins and wish to continue on, sim
ply press the SPACEBAR and this function
will be aborted.

Continuing on you reach the central area
of the BBS. A prompt will be displayed
reminding you where you are in the BBS.
The prompt for the central area is:
TC/MAIN:
From this prompt, you are allowed to

enter several commands that will take
you to other areas of the BBS. To bring
up a list of these commands, a question
mark (?) can be entered followed by a
RETURN. Entering this command after the
TC/MAIN: prompt, will cause the follow
ing menu to be displayed:

 A-NET BBS v4.0 Subsystems & Options:

 SPACEBAR aborts most text reading

This menu is like a map that will help
guide you around the BBS. Remember, a
menu can be displayed from any prompt
(or area) on the BBS by simply entering
a question mark and pressing RETURN
(NOTE: menus will vary slightly from
area to area).

I will now go through and briefly dis
cuss each command available from the
TC/MAIN: prompt. A RETURN is always
entered after a command (this way you
can make changes or corrections before
actually issuing the command). Some of
these commands will take you to other
areas of the BBS while some will just
perform a quick little task. The differ
ent areas that can be visited will be
described in more detail in upcoming
Telecommunication WorkSHOPs. For now, we
will just concentrate on what can be
done from the TC/MAIN: prompt (also

known as the MAIN or CENTRAL area). It
should be noted that when visiting any
of the different areas available through
this BBS, you will need to return to the
TC/MAIN: prompt before you can visit
another area (this is done by entering a
Q followed by a RETURN).

        THE UPLOAD/DOWNLOAD AREA

The first command we will discuss is the
UD command. This command will take you
to the Data Library subsystem. A number
can follow this command (Ex. UD3) which
will allow you to go directly to a
specific data library section. Curren
tly, the UD command can be followed by
any number 1 thru 6. If no number is
entered after the UD command, the user
is taken to section 1. The Data Library
is an area of the BBS where you will
find programs and files that can be
downloaded by your computer so that you
can make use of them. This area will be
discussed in greater detail in an
upcoming issue.

        The PUBLIC MESSAGE AREA

The B command takes you to the Public
Message Subsystem. This command can also
be followed by a number so that you can
go directly to a specific section of
that area. Currently, any number 1 thru
6 will get you to the desired section
(provided you have the correct access
level). The Public Message area is a
place where information is shared by
ADAM users all across the country. Be
sure you visit this area and make your
presence known. You will find most of
the messages that can be read here are
very helpful and educational. This area
too will also be discussed in greater
detail in an upcoming issue.

             The MAIL AREA

The M command is used to get to the
Private Mail subsystem. Any user who has
an active account through this BBS has
their own private mailbox in this area.
Each user is notified if they have any
mail waiting when first logging-on to
the BBS (you are notified in the welcome
area). If you have mail waiting, simply
enter the M command from the TC/MAIN:
prompt (you must make sure it is entered
from this prompt) and you will be taken

to the mail area. Once in the mail area,
just press RETURN and your mail will be
displayed. This area also has a lot of
other options and it will be discussed
more in the future.

       The GENERAL BULLETIN FILES

This area is accessed by entering the G
command. Here you will find TEXT files
that contain general type information
that is meant to be shared with all the
users. Some files will require a certain
access level and won't be displayed to
those who don't have the appropriate
level. One file that is located in this
area contains special bargain prices on
ADAM products (available only if you
read the file on the BBS). It is wise to
check in on this area from time to time
to see if anything is new.

When in the G1 area, the prompt you will
see is "G1:" Upon first entering this
area a list of filenames available to
you will be displayed. You can read any
of the files by entering the number
shown next to it and pressing RETURN.
You can also abort the reading of these
text files by pressing the SPACEBAR at
any time (like most other places
throughout the BBS).

You do have a few other commands avail
able to you while in the General Bul
letin area (remember to use the '?' to
see a menu). The Q command is used to
Quit this area and return to the
TC/MAIN: prompt. The L command re-Lists
the filenames that you have available to
you. The A command is used to Add en
tries to this area and currently only
SYSOP's can do this correctly so please
don't try to use this command.

        The SPECIAL PROGRAM AREA

This area is accessed with the P
command. This command is very similar to
the G command so I will only briefly
define the differences.

The Special Program area is an area
which allows you to access new or
special areas of the BBS. Some of these
areas will also have an appropriate
command that will take you there from
the TC/MAIN: prompt as well (I have just
included them here to give you an idea

of what this area is used for). I plan
to create some special game sections in
the future and they will become
available through this area.

One program available here is called the
Disk Utilities. This program need not
ordinarily be run unless you get an
ERROR 9 statement anywhere in the BBS.
What this program does is clear out all
the deleted files on the system disk so
that there will be enough space to con
tinue on. When this program is run you
will see nothing happening. You will
just have to sit back and wait until it
has completed its job.

      The SYSTEM MAINTENANCE AREA

This area can not be accessed unless you
have an access level of 10 (SYSOP
status). Therefore I will not go into
detail of this area. I will just let you
know that this is the area where a SYSOP
can check on the status of the BBS, read
FEEDBACK and LOG files, and other things
that SYSOPs are supposed to do.

     The TERMINAL PARAMETERS EDITOR

The E command takes you to this area.
Currently, all this area does is allow
you to set character display to UPPER
CASE ONLY or to Normal Mode. I hope to
make other options available in this
area in the future such as line length
parameters for different type terminal
displays.

             The PW COMMAND

This command allows you to change your
PASSWORD for security reasons. It is
wise to change it from time to time
especially if you think that someone
else might know it. Remember, you are
responsible for whatever is done under
your account so ONLY YOU should use it.

Once this command is entered, you are
asked to enter the new PASSWORD (your
PASSWORD must be at least 4 characters
long). Enter it and press RETURN. You
will then be asked to enter it again to
make sure the computer has it right.
After you have entered it a second time,
the change is instantly made. Make sure
that you make note of the PASSWORD
change!

                The WALL

The W command takes you to a kinda uni
que area of the BBS. Here user's inter
act with each other by leaving one line
messages. The thing that is fun about
this place is that you never know who is
leaving these messages (unless they type
in their name). You might call it a sort
of Graffiti board. You have three op
tions available to you in thisI WILL BREAK YOUR ARMS, AND STUMP YOUR DISK DRIVE INTO THE GROUND]

4. Cooperate and work with other Adamites. We can accomplish much if we work together. Further you may have a pet project at some future time and want help from others.

5. There are NO stupid questions. All should be encouraged to ask whatever questions about ADAM they have, this is important. Rather than someone give up on ADAM because he cannot do something he wants, we should encourage questions of all types.
All should try to take the time to answer all questions, stupid or not about ADAM. We cannot afford to lose Adamites.
For if Lyle of NIAD, Sol of DEI, Terry Fowler of Adam House, etc. had not taken the time to answer MY stupid questions in the past, I would not be active in Adam nor writing this to you. Encourage everyone, help everyone, all are important to Adam.

6. NO group is an island to itself. Try to imagine how long you could keep your Adam functioning IF you had NO access to any souI WILL BREAK YOUR ARMS, AND STUMP YOUR DISK DRIVE INTO THE GROUND]
