INTRODUCTION

* International Computing is making a large investment in the
software future of the ADAM FAMILY COMPUTER SYSTEM. We are work-
ing on software products at both the assembly and basic language
level, as well as both serious and entertainment oriented. We
are striving to become leaders in the software field for the
ADAM. To achieve this goal, we need your support!

One of the problems that developers of software have is that
it takes a lot of initial time and money to create the product
before any revenue from its sale is generated. All too often
when it is finished, customers are not familiar with the develop-
ment cycle for software and perceive that that is what the
product cost. NOT TRUE!!

If we can't make enough sales because people are stealing
copies of our products, we will not continue to put our efforts
into developing products for the ADAM. So the bottom line is
simply this: Respect the copyright of software and do your part
by not giving away or acceptIng copies of software that is
offered for sale.

Howdy again fellow Adam lovers! - Welcome to the second issue of
THE ADAM CONNECTION! We hope that you will enjoy this issue and
the many programs that we have in store for you!

We originally intended to relase the second issue before Christmas
(as you will see when you run the cover program). However, we
became so busy with other activities (and having to pull one
program SPACE CASTLES from the data packs due to a serious error)
we were forced to postpone release one month. So here we are!

A look at this issue a catalog should show that we have eight
more programs to add to your software library. Type [CATALOG]
after booting SmartBASIC and inserting your ADAM CONNECTION
data pack or disk.

                                                Program: TROVE
                                                 ENTERTAINMENT

Treasure Trove puts you into a scene, tells you your location,
gives you a tool, and tells you the tool's use, To answer the
prompt DIRECTION?, type in compass points and press [RETURN].
The legal travel direct tons are N for north, W for west, 3 for
south, E for east, MW for northwest, SE for southeast, 5W for
southwest, and NE for northeast. If you try a direction that
isn'topen, the computer will print B-O-N-K! and let you try
again.

When the computer prompts ACTION?, you can type in the use of
your tool to see if it works at that location. To take no action,
just press [RETURN]. Here's an example: Your location is Tree,
Your tool is Feather. Its use Is Tickle. To try this tool, type
[TICKLE] when the prompt [AC[OTN?] appears. The computer tells
you is you're right.

You must travel from place to place. trying out tools. Each time
a tool works, you are given a new tool that will work in another
location, In time you find the treasure,

Treasure Trove is very 5 simple, but it includes several things
that make a good adventure game, One is a closed system, which
means that you can travel. from place to place in the "world"
that has been created for the game, And there are tools that
help you.

                                                  Program: TAFFY
                                                   ENTERTAINMENT

This word game isn't about candy. It's called Taffy because of
the way you pull words apart and put them together as you play.

The computer has a list of 50 words from which it choses a secret
five-letter word that you must guess within 30 tries. It is best
that all the letters of your guess Word be different.

The computer gives you one point for each letter in your guess
word that matches the secret word. You might have two points in
one turn and none in the next. The computer gives you clues
about letters in its word.

A good way to play is to write out the alphabet. Using logic,
cross out letters that do not seem to be in the secret word. In
time, if you re good at this, you'll guess the five letters.
Then you must guess the letters in the right order - the secret
word - to win. Notive that all the secret words have no
repeated letters, so it's to your advantage to guess with words
that don't repeat letters either.

                                              Program: ARTILLERY
                                                      ARCADE GAME

Artillery Duel was submitted to us by Brad Hawley of Illinois.
In Artillery Duel it is your job to blow up the enemy, entering the
degrees in which you wish to shoot, keeping in mind the wind factor.

Artillery Duel is a one or two player game using joysticks.

Notice that to begin the game you are asked to enter two numbers
between 1 and 999. This is to give the Adam a "seed" number to
generate truly random numbers.

                                                  Program: HELLO
                                                          UTILITY

Hello was submitted to us by Raymond So, President of The United
States Adam Network.

HELLO, if stored on the. SmartBASIC tape, will load and run automati-
cally whenever you boot SmartBASIC. The passwords which may be used
are: Coleco, #2410, ADAM, and photons. The identification code is
[CONTROL] [LEFT ARROW]. The verification code is [SHIFT] (WILD CARD].

THE ADAM CONNECTION February 1985 Page 5

The security entry section is followed by a greeting and a audio?
visual display. When the program is through, it deletes itself
so you do not need to type [[NEW].

NOTE: INTERNATIONAL COMPUTING DOES NOT RECOMMEND FREQUENT STORAGE
OF PROGRAMS AND/OR DAPA ON SMARTBASlC TAPES.

                                                 program: FIGHTER-
                                                 SPACE SIMULATION

-STAR FIGHTER is a very complete "Star Trek" program for your Adam.
STAR FIGHTERS is complete with Clingons and a full arsenal of
weapons from phasers to a secret weapon.

The full list of commands are: [I] FIRE PHASERS [2] FIRE SECRET
WEAPON [3] FIRE FRONT PHOTON TORPEDOES [4] FIRE. REAR PHOTON
TORPEDOES [5] FIRE HIGH ENERGY PLASMA BOLT [6] ACTIVATE SELF
DESTRUCT [7] CHANGE WARP SPEED [8] ENEMY SHIPS FIRE (YOU DON'T
WANT THAT!) [9] ENEMY SHIPS APPROACH [10] DIVERT POWER TO
SHIELDS [11] ACTIVATE CLOAK DEVICE [12] DEACTIVATE CLOAK DEVICE
[13.] TURN SHIP TO 180 DEGREES [14] DIVERT POWER TO REPAIRS
[15] DIVERT POWER TO WEAPONS

Options 3 and 4 are a little tricky. Use the "degree11 information
with these commands. In other words, you can't fire a forward
torpedo at a ship that is behind you , and vi ce~versa. This is
where option 13 comes in handy - let is say you are out of
forward. torpedos and an enemy ship is 90 degrees to your ship.
Execute command 13 and you will swing around getting a chance to
use your rear torpedos. Options I, 2, and 5 will fire regardless
of the position of the enemy ships. Option 11 activates the
cloaking device (yes, this Enterprise has one) - Use this option
sparingly as it consumes a lot of energy. While the cloaking
device is activated the Klingons will not fire on you un-less
you attempt to use the warp drive or fire at them, givi ng away
your position. Option 12, of course turns off that device. For
warp drive, use opt ion 7. This takes you away from the enemy
and also uses a lot of energy. Usually I use this option only it
I know I `ve been beaten and to save the Enterprises from
destruction. Opt ion 10 takes a little getting use to. After each
exchange of fire you wiIl be informed on shield status. When you
see SHIELDS WEAKENING, it`s time to use this option . You will
be asked how much energy to reinforce that shield with Once
your shields are destroyed, option 10 will not work and your
best bet is to run. Options 14 & 15 are pretty much self
explanatory. They do just as they say, reinforce repair efforts
[14] or weapons [15]. Option 9 is for the person who likes that
extra advantage. It makes enemy ships come closer without firing
on you. (and gives you a chance to repair your own ship).

THE ADAM CONNECTION February 1985 Page 6

Lastly. there is option 6. If all else fails and you know you are
beaten, option 6 gives you a chance to " take " a few down with you.

At the end of every battle you will be briefed on the status of
each ship, who won, and the opportunity to play again.

I must mention the power or energy setup in the game. Your power
is measured in "Stroms" which is supplied by two dilithium crystals
and impulse power. The Primary crystal has a 20 Strom load
capacity, the secondaffy 10 stroms and impulse power 2 stroms. You
can (and probably will) overload any of these. You will be informed
of an overload if this occurs. However, if you overload the impulse
power the Enterprises will be destroyed.

To play, you will be asked how many Klingons you wish to fight.
You may choose to fight 1 to 5 at one time. After this is
established you will be prompted for a command. To enter a command
you must enter two numbers, the first number is the option, or
action you want to take, the second is which Klingon ship to use
the option against. Example: You wish to fire phaser at Klingon
number two. Simply type "1,2" [RETURN] at the prompt.

STAR FIGHTER will be a challenge to all.

                                                    Program: DOOR
                                                         ADVENTURE

One day you wake up, get ready for a hectic day of work, open your
front door and instead of seeing the familiar world outside, find
a large door in front of you.

The first thing you do is pinch your arm to awaken from this be-
wildering and somewhat frightening dream. You realize you are
awake and questions flood your mind. What happened to the world -
or, what happened to me? Is this a bad joke by your neighbor or
has the world been taken over by .. . giant doors? Wait a minute, is
this the Twilight Zone? No, this must be something pleasant - it
has to be. As the minutes pass, an insatiable yearning to open
the door grows. What's on the other side? A wish to be granted?
Eternal life? A new car? All the riches you have ever dreamed?
Or, is it the secret to winning all adventure games?

Using the doorknob, door knocker, bell or button, there are 44
random ways to open THE DOOR and see what awaits you. You must
use verb-noun combinations, such as [TURN KNOB], and you can have
as many tries as you desire.

THE DOOR, while excellent for children because of its simplicity,
is a challenge for everyone. What's behind THE DOOR? Only your
ADAM knows.
